Becoming a Registered Building Inspector

We will consider individuals in the early stages of working towards RBI application and support you with the necessary requirements to become a Registered Building Inspector (Class 1, 2, 3) with the NHBC.

NHBC provides a dedicated professional support team for the Building Safety Regulator framework, offering funding and training.

* Please note this opportunity requires a minimum of Class 2A-F RBI Registration.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and surveyors, assessing Building Control and warranty applications for residential and mixed-use schemes.

Your responsibilities include evaluating Building Control applications, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, and meeting customer needs.

While primarily based at home, you will frequently visit sites in your geographical area and occasionally visit our offices, including the head office in Milton Keynes.

Key elements of the role:

  • Assess Building Control and warranty applications for residential and non-residential developments
  • Negotiate with developers, builders, and advisors from design to completion to ensure compliance with regulations and standards
  • Coordinate inspections, issue certificates, approve sites, and resolve certification issues
  • Support colleagues with expert advice, inspections of complex building features, and review of progress

Additional support: NHBC offers a dedicated professional support team, training, guidance, development, and financial funding.

What we are looking for:

  • Deep knowledge of Building Regulations, building technology, and technical training
  • Experience with structural defects, claims, engineering, NHBC Standards, and site inspections is advantageous
  • Extensive experience in building/construction, especially in housing and commercial sectors
  • Understanding of building pathology
  • Excellent communication skills for internal and external audiences
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and development-oriented
  • Experience in Building Control
  • A full driving license is required

Education and Qualifications:

  • Working towards or holding chartered membership of a professional institution (e.g., MCIOB, CABE)
  • Construction-related qualifications such as City and Guilds, HNC, HND, NVQ, or equivalent
