Job summary

NHFT in the United Kingdom is seeking a Health and Safety professional to oversee fire safety and risk management across a building portfolio. You will ensure staff understand local procedures, conduct safety inspections, and coordinate with Fire Marshalls and the Fire Brigade as required.

The role requires NHS and public sector experience, a strong grasp of fire safety, risk assessment, and staff training, with flexibility for agile or part-time patterns.

Qualifications

  • Health and safety experience in a relevant setting.
  • NHS experience is essential.
  • Desirable: public sector experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that any local procedures are communicated and understood by all staff working in the building.
  • Ensure there are arrangements for the control and regular safety inspection of all areas of the building.
  • Ensure adequately trained Fire Marshalls are available for the building and enough Fire Marshalls are available daily.
  • Ensure staff are aware of local fire procedures, including out hours working environments
  • Ensure checks are in place daily to ensure Fire exit routes are always kept clear and free from obstructions
  • Identify Fire Marshalls for all departments on site and ensure they understand their roles in a fire alarm activation
  • Lead in the event of fire alarm activation, coordinate with Fire Marshalls for a sweep and liaise with the fire brigade if on site
  • Ensure adequate numbers of staff are trained in fire prevention/awareness and firefighting; appoint Fire Coordinators and Fire Marshalls; undertake emergency drills
  • Ensure staff are trained in the use of Evacuation chairs (if relevant) and provide Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP)
  • Provide induction for staff/new staff or transfers, related to fire safety
  • Ensure Fire Safety checklists from the Health and Safety department are completed and actions closed out
  • Support Estates by routine testing of fire alarms, emergency lighting, and other safety equipment
  • Maintain Fire Risk Assessment and action plan, address deficiencies
  • Ensure First Aiders are appointed and contact information is readily available
  • Maintain first aid resources and ensure staff awareness
  • Monitor and instruct maintenance staff on premises with respect to risks and authorisation
  • Notify and coordinate changes to buildings with appropriate staff
  • Ensure security systems maintain safety without compromising fire safety
  • Report breaches of fire safety arrangements to Estates for investigation
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related ill health; coordinate risk assessments for building issues
  • Co-operate with Estates contractor for yearly PAT testing
  • Coordinate information to Estates Capital Projects on residual risks from refurbishments
  • Facilitate regular Building stakeholder meetings
  • Act as a Green Champion for energy and utilities efficiency
