Job summary

Reading Borough Council is seeking an experienced Building Inspector, including senior level responsibilities, to inspect sites and ensure compliance with Building Regulations. The role includes supervising junior staff, working on higher-risk buildings and operating within a hybrid working pattern.

You will provide technical guidance, review plans and reports, and liaise with developers, contractors and homeowners, upholding safety and regulatory standards across varied schemes.

Qualifications

• Registration with the Building Safety Regulator at a minimum level of 2a.
• Substantial Building Control experience across residential, commercial and complex developments.
• Thorough understanding of the Building Regulations and associated legislation.
• Demonstrated competence at Level 2.

Responsibilities

• Conduct site inspections and advise developers, builders and homeowners on Building Regulation requirements.
• Assess plans and specifications for compliance with regulations.
• Investigate reports of dangerous structures and contribute to enforcement action when necessary.
• Provide technical advice and customer service to clients, colleagues and external partners.
• Support junior staff through supervision, mentoring and technical guidance.
• Represent the team in meetings with developers, contractors and other stakeholders when called upon.

Job description

A Building Control post in Reading Borough Council's team, offered at Building Inspector and Senior Building Inspector level. Inspectors check projects from domestic extensions to major commercial schemes against the Building Regulations, review plans and specifications, and look into reports of dangerous structures. The post also involves supervising junior staff, work on higher-risk buildings and hybrid working. Applicants must already be registered with the Building Safety Regulator at level 2a.
