Job description
BSL Tutor – SEND & Communication Needs Focus

Connex Education is recruiting skilled and compassionate BSL Tutors to work with children and young people who are deaf or have hearing impairments, often alongside other SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) such as Autism, language delays, or additional learning needs.

This is a highly rewarding one-to-one tuition role where you’ll use British Sign Language to support learners in developing key communication skills, while also providing emotional encouragement and tailored academic support. You’ll play a crucial role in helping young people feel understood, valued, and capable of progress both in and out of the classroom.

Whether you’re a qualified teacher, communication support worker, or experienced BSL practitioner, this role is ideal for those passionate about breaking down communication barriers and making a real difference.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver one-to-one BSL tuition to children and young people with a range of communication and learning needs.
  • Tailor your teaching to support learners who are deaf, hard of hearing, or who use BSL as part of a Total Communication approach.
  • Foster strong, supportive relationships that encourage trust, confidence, and engagement.
  • Support both language acquisition and personal development, helping learners gain independence, social skills, and self-esteem.
  • Collaborate with families, carers, and multi-disciplinary teams to provide a consistent and joined-up approach.
  • Keep detailed records of attendance, session content, engagement, and student progress.
  • Ensure safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety procedures are followed at all times.
  • Be flexible and responsive to each learner’s changing needs and communication preferences.
What We’re Looking For
  • Recognised BSL qualification (Level 2 or above essential; Level 3+ highly desirable).
  • Experience delivering BSL tuition or support to children and young people.
  • Knowledge of deaf awareness, SEND, and communication strategies for diverse learning needs.
  • Patient, empathetic, and skilled in building trust with learners who may face communication barriers.
  • Experience in SEND settings, alternative provision, speech & language support, or youth work is highly advantageous.
  • Confident in planning and delivering individualised learning sessions.
  • Able to manage your own caseload and time effectively.
  • Valid Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car (preferred but not essential).

Flexible working to suit your availability and travel preferences.
