Job Introduction

Join the team that keeps the BBC on air, around the clock and around the world.

The Centralised Coding & Multiplexing (CCM) team plays a crucial role in encoding and distributing BBC content across TV, radio, and online platforms. We take live signals from Playout and prepare them for delivery to audiences in the UK and internationally. Our work ensures that BBC services are always available, no matter the time or platform.

We’re also expanding our remit to include 3rd line support for the BBC’s Arista network – a cutting-edge, multi-tenanted media and enterprise infrastructure.

Main Responsibilities

The role works as part of a shift-working team providing 24 hour operational support, incident management and stakeholder communication for a range of BBC platforms and services.

Responsibilities

As a Broadcast Operations Engineer, you’ll be part of a collaborative, shift-based team providing 24/7 operational support. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring and supporting BBC applications hosted in on-premise environments.
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues using a range of monitoring tools.
  • Managing incidents from initial report to resolution, including major incidents, while meeting service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Logging and documenting incidents in line with ITIL best practices.
  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including during high-impact events.
  • Ensuring clear and thorough handovers between shifts.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement through documentation, process development, and operational tooling.

Are the right candidate?

We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, technical environment and is passionate about keeping services running smoothly. You will be a curious and collaborative network enthusiast that thrives in a team environment. You will enjoy using your network knowledge to get to the root of problems and be confident in presenting solutions.

Experience Required

  • Experience in 1st and 2nd line operations within a professional setting.
  • Knowledge of DVB broadcasting and IP networking.
  • Familiarity with CDNs and on-prem infrastructure, especially VMware.
  • Experience using diagnostic and monitoring tools.
  • A solid understanding of incident prioritisation and ITIL practices.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence stake-holders
  • Experience working with cloud platforms.
  • Command-line experience with Linux (desirable but not essential).

About The BBC

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
