Job description
Overview

Breast Consultant Radiologist

Job Plan Commitment: 10 PA

We are looking for a Breast Radiologist to join the Radiology team at GWH. The posts are full-time, but we would consider part time applicants.

The Breast Centre is the base for the Wiltshire Breast Screening Service for Swindon, North and West Wiltshire. We screen nearly 100,000 ladies over a three-year cycle. There are two screening vans and a static facility at the Great Western Hospital. The Breast Centre also provides a symptomatic service for Swindon and Wiltshire. The department has Hologic mammography units with tomosynthesis. We are setting up a contrast enhanced mammography (CEM) service shortly. Localisations are usually done with Magseed.

The Radiology department is well-equipped, with two 128-slice Siemens CT scanners, two 1.5T Siemens MRI scanners, digital screening rooms and updated ultrasound machines. We also have a recently installed SPECT CT and new dual-source Cardiac CT scanner, and CT/MRI vans/static scanners for additional workload at our Community Diagnostic Centre in West Swindon. There is a private practice which works as a cooperative.

The Radiologists are a happy, functional and hard-working team. The on-call system provides consultant presence from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, and 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday, with a further 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday on-call. Outside of these hours we are supported by an outsourced reporting company. There is also the option for home-working computers to be set up. All medical staff are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director.

Responsibilities
  • Multidisciplinary team work as a key component of the Trust and MDT discussions with other colleagues.
  • Develop sub-specialty interests that fit in with Directorate needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
  • Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties and contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Support the Lead Clinician in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Directorate Management Team.
  • Contribute to the leadership and development of the specialty under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director.
  • Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate, including support to the General Manager to achieve objectives.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
  • Assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources, including equipment and drugs, within budgets.
  • Work within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders and financial procedures.
Qualifications

The post holder is required to hold a CCST or CCT and should be trained in all aspects of the specialty.
