Breast Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Breast Unit at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Part-time Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon (0.6 WTE), working at both the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. The successful candidate will join an existing team of six breast surgeons, four specialty doctors and five advanced nurse practitioners. The Unit is also supported by specialist registrars and Clinical Nurse Specialists. HHFT has an international reputation for oncoplastic surgery, seeing over 6000 new referrals per annum and treating approximately 500-600 new breast cancers.

The Unit has been research active for many years with numerous publications of original research and longitudinal cohort studies. We have also participated in regional, national and international clinical trials. The Unit is an early adopter of new technology.

HHFT also hosts the North and Mid Hampshire Breast Screening unit, providing Breast Screening for much of the population of Hampshire. Screening assessment is all undertaken at the centre in Winchester. We have moved to entirely digital mammographic equipment and have ultrasound and breast MRI facilities on both sites. The service is supported by four Consultant Breast Radiologists and a team of Consultant Histopathologists. The other members of the team include a Breast Services Manager, Radiographers, Nurses, Physician Associates and Administrative staff.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake clinical duties as agreed with the Clinical Lead for Breast Services including:

  • Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
  • Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
  • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards and outpatients
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care.
  • Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The appointee will be expected to participate in and share responsibility with the existing consultants for:

  • The clinical workload of the department and service development
  • Developing and providing services in his/her own area of specialist interest
  • The administrative affairs of the department
  • Research and audit activities.
  • The successful appointee would be expected to become a CI/PI and be mentored if necessary.
  • Participate in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate teaching programmes, and teaching of other healthcare professionals within the department.
  • Participate in appraisal and assessment of junior medical colleagues, as delegated by the Director Medical Education.
  • Support external teaching eg. Masterclasses and observerships.

Support and teach colleagues on a day-to-day basis, for example, during handovers, ward rounds and outpatient clinics

Participate in appraisal and assessment of junior medical colleagues, as delegated by the Director Medical Education.

Support external teaching eg. Masterclasses and observerships.
