Are you an experienced bookkeeper with strong VAT knowledge and a background in supporting busy accountancy teams?

A long-established and reputable accountancy practice in Grays is seeking a Bookkeeper to join its friendly and supportive team. This role has become available due to a combination of retirement and staff movement, creating a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional looking to join a stable, client-focused firm.

The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and confident managing multiple bookkeeping clients while supporting the wider accounts team.

Role Responsibilities

Preparing and submitting approximately 40 VAT returns per quarter, of which around 28 clients require bookkeeping from prime entry records
Managing data input, reconciliation, and VAT treatment across varied client records
Assisting the accounts team with accounts preparation for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies
Ensuring accurate financial data entry and file maintenance
Liaising with clients and colleagues to collect missing information or resolve discrepancies

Candidate Requirements

A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a similar role within an accountancy or business services environment
Strong working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT application
Proficient in SAGE Line 50 and QuickBooks
Familiarity with additional platforms such as CCH Accounts Production, Xero, and other bookkeeping/accounting systems is desirable
Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
Able to work effectively in a busy office environment with minimal supervision
Strong communication skills with a professional and approachable manner
