Job summary

EQ Accountants, part of the Sumer Group in Edinburgh, is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to manage a portfolio of clients, notably in agriculture. You’ll process A/R and A/P, perform bank reconciliations, prepare VAT returns, and set up client software.

The role emphasizes teamwork, on‑the‑job learning, and training on Xero and Sage, with a supportive environment and clear progression paths within our Business Outsourcing department.

Qualifications

• Proven experience handling bookkeeping services for a portfolio of clients (agriculture client experience desired but not essential).
• On-the-job learning with internal training; familiarity with Xero/SAGE desirable.
• Good numerical skills and strong communication with clients via phone, Teams or email.
• Team player who shares knowledge and meets tight deadlines in a collaborative environment.
• Comfortable with change and excited to work in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Process accounts payable and receivable for a portfolio of clients
• Complete bank reconciliations with accuracy and efficiency
• Preparing and submitting VAT returns
• Setting up client software for clients wishing to undertake their own bookkeeping
• Providing helpful training to clients on using Xero & SAGE

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

• Proven experience handling bookkeeping services for a portfolio of clients (agriculture client experience desired but not essential)
• You will be eager to learn as we provide on the job learning with internal training provided, although knowledge of bookkeeping software such as Xero & SAGE would be desirable
• Have good numerical skills and excellent communication skills to talk with clients over the phone, on MS Teams or over email
• Be a team player and thrive in a collaborative environment, willing to share knowledge, support colleagues and be happy to work as part of a team to meet tight deadlines
• Be comfortable with change and excited by the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment
