Job description

The Oxford Bone Marrow Transplant programme treats 130+ patients each year with Allogeneic and Autograft Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplants from across the Thames Valley region. You will have the opportunity to work in a highly experienced and skilled team caring for patients in the planning, treatment, and post-BMT phases. As part of the BMT Specialist Nursing team, you will work with a wider multidisciplinary team of doctors, allied health professionals, and scientists to plan and coordinate transplants, as well as support and counsel patients through pre- and post-treatment. The work spans outpatient clinics, day treatment units, ambulatory, and inpatient care. Alongside clinical duties, there are opportunities to be involved in service development, departmental education, emerging BMT research, national forums, and international conferences.

The Specialist Nurse will provide expert nursing care to patients referred to the Oxford BMT service. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Accepting patient referrals within agreed criteria and serving as the key worker for a designated patient caseload.
  2. Providing advice, education, and support to patients, their carers, related donors, and healthcare professionals.
  3. Practicing clinically in approved care settings according to departmental protocols.
  4. Contributing to the smooth operation of the BMT service.
  5. Working across departmental boundaries and liaising with hospital and community teams to support patient and family-centered care.
  6. Participating in the ongoing development of the BMT service.

Additional duties include:

  1. Working independently with patients throughout the autograft and allograft pathways, including nurse-led consultations.
  2. Liaising with District General Hospitals to ensure seamless treatment during transplant pathways.
  3. Assisting in education and pathway management for DGH services establishing transplant programs.
  4. Collaborating with NHSBT and other registries regarding cell collection and infusion.
  5. Providing clinical advice based on current evidence-based practices.
  6. Promoting clinical excellence in line with JACIE standards.
  7. Assessing patients holistically and providing tailored advice and support.
  8. Supporting the development of nursing policies related to the BMT service.

Qualifications and experience required include:

  1. Registered nurse (Part 1, 8, 12, or 15 of the register, depending on practice area).
  2. First degree in nursing, midwifery (HEI Level 5 or 6), or equivalent.
  3. Postgraduate professional development evidence via a CPD portfolio.
  4. Teaching, assessment, or mentoring qualification.
  5. Up-to-date knowledge in the specialty.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Experience in teaching and mentoring patients and staff.
  8. Appropriate UK professional registration.
