UHI Shetland is seeking a skilled and motivated Boat Helmsperson & Instructor to support our growing portfolio of marine training and research activities. Based in one of the most dynamic maritime environments in the UK, this is a unique opportunity to play a central role in delivering high-quality vessel operations and instruction that support both academic learning and real-world fieldwork.

About the Role

As Boat Helmsperson & Instructor, you will:

  • Operate and maintain UHI Shetland's fleet of research and training vessels safely and efficiently.
  • Deliver practical training in small boat handling and safety at sea, including instruction aligned with RYA and/or MCA standards.
  • Support staff and student fieldwork across a range of marine science, aquaculture, and maritime training programmes.
  • Ensure all vessel operations comply with relevant health, safety, and maritime legislation.
  • Maintain accurate logs, inspection records, and contribute to the development of operational procedures.

This is a hands-on, varied role ideal for someone with a strong maritime background, a passion for education, and a commitment to promoting best practices in marine safety and seamanship.
