NWCAB’s Board of Directors are looking for four new Directors to work alongside other board members to oversee and support our Chief Executive and our dynamic team of staff and volunteers. Later this year, we will be moving premises and we are seeking to expand our Board to support this process and our onward development. At this important point in our journey, we are seeking Directors who can bring different perspectives to help the Bureau achieve its plans for the future and provide the most relevant and accessible advice services possible.

The Board is currently made up of seven Directors, each offering a different skill-set that can support the governance needs and development aims of the organisation. We welcome applications from anyone who feels passionate about our work, regardless of professional background.

The Board has identified an upcoming skills gap related to third sector fundraising and governance, and we hope to fill one of the four roles with someone who has experience of this kind. We would encourage applicants with this background to also consider joining our Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee (FRAC).

For the remaining three roles, we encourage candidates of all kinds, particularly those with strong knowledge of and connections to north west Glasgow. Most important to us is finding candidates who fit our values and our organisation. We are looking for people who are approachable, transparent, team players, positive influencers and who are willing to contribute to debate.

GNWCAB’s staff team, volunteers and clients come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and widening access and inclusion is central to our mission and our values. We want our Board to be representative of our local community and so would welcome approaches from people who live locally or have lived experience of issues facing our clients. We encourage applications from groups that are under-represented on charity boards, particularly people from Black, Asian, or other minority ethnic communities, as well as young and Disabled people.

We happily welcome applications from people who have not been senior volunteers or sat on a board before. GNWCAB is committed to the ongoing development of our staff and volunteers and we provide opportunities for training and engagement across the organisation on a regular basis. As a new Director, you will be fully inducted and offered training tailored to your level of experience that would support your development in the role.

About the job

The role of a Welfare Outreach Adviser involves offering guidance and support to individuals in need. This position is based at Glasgow North West Citizens Advice Bureau in Maryhill, with additional outreach conducted in various GP Practices across the northwest of Glasgow. We are an independent and innovative advice organisation providing holistic advice and support to local people.

We are looking for client-focused individuals with experience of providing income maximisation as part of overall holistic advice and support. In this role, you will see clients in person, as well as providing advice via telephony, email and digital channels ensuring clients receive the advice, information and support needed.

• Sets the tone for the Board, adopting a culture of integrity, transparency, accountability and good governance. Ensures the Board remains focused on long-term goals aligned to the organisation’s mission and values, and the organisation is well placed to expand when the opportunities are right and navigate the challenges confidently.
• Must ensure the meetings are productive and all members contribute effectively, and decisions are made in a timely and efficient manner. Ability to draw the best from the expertise around the table.
• Provides strategic oversight, working closely with senior management, to deliver the agreed organisation’s Strategic Plan.
• Work with the Board Secretary to plan the Board meetings effectively.
• Relationship with the Senior Management Team / Director is crucial for the prosperity of the organisation. The Chair acts as a mentor/adviser/line manager and manages the performance of the Director. The Chair has the responsibility to embed mutual respect, trust and open communication.

External Representation:

• This involves communicating the organisation’s vision and listening/addressing the concerns and challenges. The Chair must acquire adequate knowledge in relation to Home-Start operational work and strategic objectives to be able to promote and speak on behalf of the organisation when opportunities arise.

Risk & Financial Management:

• Responsibility in overseeing the organisation’s risk management and financial framework. Work closely with the Senior Management Team to ensure that mitigation strategies are in place and monitoring the effectiveness of the strategies. Work with the Board and management to ensure the organisation is prepared to face both anticipated and unforeseen challenges.

Ethical Standards:

• Responsibility to ensure highest ethical standards, a culture of ethical behaviour and ethical decision making and compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. The Chair must lead by example.
• Performance Management:
• The Chair manages the performance of the Director and the individual Trustees to ensure they are fulfilling their responsibilities delivering the organisation’s objectives effectively. The Chair is also responsible for overseeing the work of sub-committees (e.g. Finance & Audit and Performance Through People).

Succession Planning:

• To ensure continuity and stability and help the organisation maintain its momentum and achieve its objectives. The Chair is responsible to identify and develop potential leadership talents within the organisation and plan for eventual transition of key roles, including the Director and Board members.
• The Chair can be called to mediate conflicts within the Board or between the Board and management. The Chair must have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to remain impartial and a focus on finding solutions that are in the best interest of the organisation.

We are looking for Trustees interested in Disabled People's Organisations and Independent Living, who have skills relevant to Board governance.

The Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living (LCiL) is a person-led not-for-profit organisation. We work with disabled people regardless of their impairments, people with long-term conditions and older people, parents and carers. We support people in Edinburgh, West Lothian, East Lothian and Midlothian.

LCiL supports Independent Living. Independent Living means all disabled people having the same freedom, choice, dignity, and control as other citizens at home, at work, and in the community. It does not mean living by yourself or fending for yourself. It means rights to practical assistance and support to participate in society and live an ordinary life.

The Opportunity

LCiL is looking to recruit up to four new board members. You would be joining the organisation at a crucial and exciting time. After some staffing issues and dealing with the loss of our much-loved Chair in early January, the organisation has now settled under the leadership of its former CEO who has returned in an interim capacity. One of her primary tasks is to recruit a permanent Chief Executive with guidance from the Board. Thus, she is also supporting the growth of this new team of Board members alongside our existing Directors. LCiL is a vibrant Disabled People’s Organisation, and as such we are looking for individuals with experience of disability or with a strong interest in Independent Living for Disabled People. Additionally, you would bring relevant professional skills to the role.
