Role and Scope

The BMS / Controls Engineer is responsible for working on assignments covering all aspects of industrial and commercial energy usage, energy savings, utility plant redevelopment, and CO2 emission reduction. The Controls Engineer will formulate, evaluate, and prepare technical analyses on control systems during feasibility studies, scheme design, and project implementation.

The Controls Engineer will work in areas including CHP, refrigeration, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps, HVAC, boilers, compressed air, and lighting systems.

The ideal candidate will have a good level of technical expertise, with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience. The candidate should be a chartered Engineer or in the process of obtaining Chartered status.

Responsibilities
Specific Duties

The BMS / Controls Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • Feasibility studies:
  • Assessment of existing control system configuration and operation at client sites.
  • Development of control system requirements for proposed energy projects, including interface with existing control provisions, client and Ameresco interface requirements, instrumentation requirements, etc.
  • Control system conceptual design and specification.
  • Preparation of summary reports.
  • Scheme Design (Front End Design):
  • Further definition of conceptual design from feasibility stage, including on-site assessments as necessary.
  • Finalization of scheme design based on final energy solutions.
  • Development of User Requirements Specification (URS), detailing control strategy, instrument schedules, I/O requirements, hardware specifications, data storage, HMI mimic requirements, remote access provisions, and interface with existing plant and control systems.
  • Provide technical support throughout procurement and construction phases, including:
  • Supporting project implementation team during execution.
  • Defining scope of work for subcontractors.
  • Interfacing with suppliers.
  • Approving design changes.
  • Resolving issues.
  • Conducting site visits to ensure compliance with scope, specifications, and build quality.
  • Participating in HAZOP and technical review meetings as required.
  • Technical support for safe commissioning and project handover:
  • Interactive planning sessions with clients and subcontractors.
  • Developing installation, operational, and performance protocols.
  • Validating plant performance.
  • Implementing controls according to the agreed strategy.
  • Preparing sign-off and handover documentation.

Additionally, the role includes technical supervision and mentoring of junior engineering staff, updating company systems, and contributing to operational improvements and business development. All applicants must be eligible to work legally in the UK.
