An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the leadership team of East and South East London (ESEL) Pathology Partnership in our journey to excellence. Applications are invited for the position of Blood Transfusion Scientific Lead for our ESEL Network. The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic, share our vision of a high-quality transfusion service, and be suitably qualified and highly experienced in Blood Transfusion sciences. This role is offered as substantive employment.
The role provides management and leadership for the Blood Transfusion services across the ESEL Pathology network. The post holder will lead and manage the delivery and development of Blood Transfusion services across all seven Partnership sites, with potential for expansion. Responsibilities include coordinating, developing, and implementing complex services and transformations to improve efficiency and quality. The post involves overseeing Blood Transfusion projects, planning daily service delivery, and establishing performance management processes to monitor and address performance issues promptly.
The successful candidate will have direct line management and provide leadership to Operational Leads across the ESEL Network. They will develop and lead a highly skilled workforce providing a comprehensive, cost-effective, and high-quality Blood Transfusion service. The post also involves leading the ESEL Transfusion Practitioner Team, working closely with the Hospital Transfusion Committee to ensure best practices, appropriate use of blood components, and alternatives to transfusion, in line with partnership directives, BCSH guidelines 2014, and BSQR 2005.
The post holder will take a strategic lead in maintaining a high-quality, responsive service that complies with regulatory standards, including the EU Directive on Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 (MHRA), UKAS ISO15189 accreditation, and SHOT standards. Collaboration with the Pathology Quality & Governance Team will be essential to achieve and maintain compliance across the ESEL Network. The role aligns with the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and the National Blood Transfusion Committee (NBTC) 5-year strategy to enhance the safety of transfusion care in the NHS.
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership provides pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. It is hosted by Barts Health. The network's main hub is the Royal London Hospital, with Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) at other hospital sites.
Pathology services include Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry), Infectious Diseases (Microbiology, Virology), Cellular Pathology (Histopathology, Cytology, Mortuary services), Immunology, Cytogenetics, Molecular Haematology, Immunophenotyping, Clinical Transplantation, and Retinoblastoma.
The total operating costs for 2020/21 were approximately £126 million per annum, with a workforce of around 822 WTE.
