The Opportunity

You will join Arup as a Consultant within our protective design engineering team, focusing on sustainable development across various markets and industries. Your projects will range from advisory roles to engineering solutions such as blast engineering and hostile vehicle mitigation, covering all project lifecycle stages from research & development to detailed design.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams both within and outside Arup, including architecture, SMEP, façade engineering, transport and logistics, civil and highways engineering, fire engineering, and computational structural mechanics. This role offers exposure to a broad spectrum of projects across different locations, with potential travel opportunities.

Your responsibilities include designing blast-resistant structures, developing technical and business competencies, and communicating threat and risk concepts effectively. You will understand and contribute to the planning, design, and construction processes in a multidisciplinary environment, managing detailed analyses and developing innovative solutions.

Is this role right for you?

We seek talented structural engineers with broad structural design knowledge and an interest in resilient structural design, to join our London team and possibly work on international projects. Arup’s protective design team is one of the largest globally, with offices in London, Manchester, New York, San Francisco, Melbourne, and Singapore, working as one team.

This role offers a unique opportunity to build expertise in blast engineering, requiring a different approach from traditional design. It is suitable for experienced practitioners looking to advance their careers or talented structural engineers aiming to specialize further. The ideal candidate can communicate threat, risk, and mitigation concepts, develop and present ideas, and manage detailed analyses and specifications for blast and vehicle hardening measures. Experience in blast engineering is desirable but not essential.

Required skills and experience include:

  • Masters degree in civil/structural engineering, with a strong record in structural design, and chartered or near-chartered status with relevant institutions.
  • Experience with infrastructure or building projects, and knowledge of steel, reinforced concrete, timber, or masonry structures in accordance with standards.
  • Understanding of construction methodologies, buildability, and relevant regulations.

This position is based in London or Manchester, with occasional travel outside the UK as needed.
