At Optical Express we are committed to giving patients a world class level of service and clinical care. With over 130 clinics across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, Optical Express offers a full range of eye care services from glasses to contact lenses to routine eye examinations and vision correction surgery.

The role:

Our aim is to continually improve the quality of care we provide to our patients by meticulously and methodically analysing outcome data. We operate a ‘continuous quality improvement’ model which we accomplish through a number of activities, including: internal quality control, performance and outcomes analysis, interfacing with leaders in the field of vision correction, and producing insightful and high-quality research.

The Biostatistician has responsibility for providing statistical and analytical expertise across Optical Express, devising statistical analysis plans and performing data analysis within Excel and SAS. The results feed into our world renowned International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB), and assist in developing our clinical governance protocol.

You will also be responsible for communicating the methodologies used and the results in both written and oral formats. You will typically be working on several projects at one time, leading to a significantly higher output than any other ophthalmic business in the world today, and we publish more data than any other business or organisation.

The Biostatistician reports to the Clinical Services Director in Glasgow and will work closely with teams across all specialties to ensure any statistical elements of projects are completed to an exceptionally high standard, in a timely fashion and in line with Optical Express expectations.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Monitor and assemble the OE clinical data sets
  • Monitor data for consistency and completion

Develop methodologies to assist in:

  • Data cleaning and screening
  • Resolving inconsistencies
  • Assembling the OE clinical data into appropriate databases for analysis
  • Designing, evaluating and performing biostatistical analyses to extract the wealth of ocular effects and business specific data intrinsic to the Optical Express clinical data sets

Produce quarterly Optical Express clinical outcome and patient reported outcome reports with sound statistical integrity based on:

  • Data monitoring
  • Clinician evaluation using key performance indicators (KPI)
  • Location and type of procedure
  • Other reports or analysis as required by the Clinical Services Director
  • Produce daily, weekly and monthly reports that assess business performance across a number of key areas

Assist in clinical research projects by performing the following:

  • Review all project protocols
  • Author protocol statistical analysis sections
  • Generate study randomisation
  • Review case report forms to ensure that protocol objectives are met, and project standards maintained
  • Develop study analysis plans
  • Develop statistical programs as necessary to perform analyses and prepare data displays
  • Provide support for publication

Assist in manuscript and presentation preparation by providing biostatistical analyses of data, preparing tables and graphs of results.

Assist in the development of statistical and presentation packages for Optometry, Surgeon and Medical Advisory Board meetings in addition to presentations to be made at conferences and events.

Assist in the development of reports and presentation packages to assess business performance for key stakeholders.

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of theoretical and applied statistics and keep abreast of new developments in statistics and regulatory guidance through literature review and attendance at workshops and professional meetings.

Ideally we are looking for a degree or equivalent higher qualification in a scientific or mathematical discipline, although a Masters or PhD would be highly advantageous. The ideal candidate will possess good interpersonal skills that enable effective communication with all levels of management.

A career at Optical Express is fulfilling, fun and rewarding. As an employee, you can benefit from the following:

  • An industry leading salary plus excellent bonus potential
  • State of the art, modern working environments
  • 29 days’ annual leave
  • Free Laser Eye Surgery and Intraocular Lens Surgery
