Biomedical Support Worker Higher Level - Central Specimen Reception

TheCentral Specimen Reception at LTHT is looking to recruit B3 support workersto join our busy teams supporting both Leeds General Infirmary and St James.

Asa true central reception, we support Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology,Immunology and Specialist Lab Medicine.

Theservice is 24/7 with our busiest time being 4pm 9pm.

Main duties of the job

Sortingof samples as they arrive.

Recognitionof sample types and suitability for processing.

Dataentry.

Respondingto urgent work or batched work.

Workflexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as agreedwith line manager.

Analysermaintenance.

Loadingand unloading analysers, initial troubleshooting.

Answeringthe phone.

Samplepreparation and packaging of samples for referral to other laboratories.

Stockcontrol.

Shiftsupervisor.

Wework 24/7, 365 days a year. Ourstaffing is managed with a roster produced in advance with combinations ofshifts. 7:30 16:00, 8:30 17:00.12:30 21:00 and 20:30 -08:00. Theseare distributed evenly adhering to Working Time Directive Laws.

Asreception is purely BSW staffed, there is not a provision for any portfoliotraining or direct links into disciplines for those wishing to begin theirIBMS portfolios.

Job responsibilities

Thepost holder will be a member of a large team responsible for the initialprocessing of patient samples. As ahigher-level biomedical support worker, there will be additionalresponsibilities including the organisation of workflows during shifts. You will be required to communicateeffectively with colleagues in CSR and other health care professionals.

Complextasks including the use of analysers and maintenance using standard operatingprocedures. Troubleshooting withescalation to Biomedical Scientists as required.

Preparationof chemical reagents.

Processingof samples as per standard operating procedures.

Rejectingsamples following defined rules.

Disposalof clinical waste and general housekeeping.

Operatingthe laboratory IT system (Winpath).

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Literate/Numerate. (GCSE Maths & English Grade A-C or equivalent)
  • Level 3 qualification (E.g. NVQ) in a laboratory or science-related subject
  • Computer skills are essential requirements of the job.
  • Relevant working laboratory experience
  • Willingness to undertake further in-house or formal training
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement part I
Experience
  • Knowledge of conventional IT software and IT literacy e.g. Microsoft Office
  • Experience of using automation in a laboratory.
  • Previous experience of working in a laboratory.
  • Aware of laboratory information systems
  • Experience of working in a specimen reception
Skills & behaviours
  • Able to work autonomously and use own initiative.
  • Able to prioritise and organise workload with the team.
  • Flexible approach to work
Additional Requirements
  • Fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary)
  • Able to work at LGI and SJH as rotad in advance.
  • Can work shifts over 24/7 365 days per year.
