Biomedical Scientist Team Manager - Training and Education Facilitator in Virology/Immunology

The Virology, Immunology and Microbiology departments that make up Infection Sciences are looking to further develop our test repertoire using the platforms available. We have a small, enthusiastic and friendly team with a good reputation who are a key part of acute service provision within North Cumbria. This busy department services internal and external customers and requires individuals to work under pressure with accuracy. Applications are invited from HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists with a keen interest in training and education. A strong background in Immunology and/or Virology is essential, alongside the ability to communicate effectively with the pathology team and senior staff within the wider hospital. Support is available to further develop your management skills. There will be a commitment to weekend working on a rota basis.

Main duties of the job
  • Oversee the training and education aspects of the laboratory team and coordinate and monitor the work of rotating staff. This includes ensuring completion of training logs, competence assessments, investigating training resources, maintaining associated documents on eQMS, coordinating IBMS portfolios and participating in the departmental appraisal scheme for staff.
  • Work alongside the Virology and Immunology team managers to coordinate the delivery of the Virology/Immunology service and deputise for the operational manager in their absence.
  • Support the diagnostic workload (approximately 140,000 virology/immunology tests per year) using a wide range of automated serological testing across both disciplines and molecular platforms onsite. We are a referral centre for Aspergillus, Farmers Lung and Avian precipitin work.

Qualifications
  • Essential: BSc in biomedical science or equivalent; HCPC registration; MSc in healthcare science or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Foundation management certificate or equivalent; IT skills (EITS) or equivalent.
Experience
  • Essential: Staff supervision within an NHS laboratory; extensive relevant technical/clinical techniques and methodologies; quality, finance, staffing and risk assessment policies and procedures.
  • Desirable: Audit experience.
Knowledge
  • Essential: CPD with portfolio; specialist knowledge in area of practice; EQA and IQA procedures; complex analytical systems; stock management; equality legislation and best practice.
  • Desirable: Equality impact assessment; quality management; CPA standards; trust and department H&S procedures.
Skills and aptitudes
  • Essential: Technical competence to supervise in any section; effective communication; advanced troubleshooting; leadership; training formulation and evaluation; rota/work planning; deputising for the operational manager; ability to review findings and manage people.
  • Desirable: Ability to perform complex statistical analysis of data and interpretation.
Personal circumstances and other requirements
  • Essential: Commitment to CPD; flexible working patterns; ability to travel independently between hospital sites.
  • Desirable: Driving licence.
