Job description

Band 7 - Biomedical Scientist Team Leader / Biochemistry Senior BMS

Full time - 37.5 hours per week. Main hours will be Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 17:30, with availability to cover 24/7 shifts if all other options are exhausted.

The Pathology department at Stepping Hill Hospital (Stockport NHS Foundation Trust) is seeking a Biochemistry Senior BMS to join the Blood Sciences team. The successful applicant will join a friendly and passionate team providing diagnostic services to hospital patients and the wider community.

This role supports the delivery of Blood Sciences services. The successful candidate must deputise for and assist the Technical Heads of Department to maintain high-quality services, meeting user requirements within available resources.

The candidate will play a key role in delivering IT configurations for the Biochemistry department. They must demonstrate passion, knowledge, understanding, and experience in laboratory IT systems, including LIMS, test setup and mapping, data transmission between requesting and reporting applications, instrument middleware, data analysis, troubleshooting, and setting up tests on NPEx. Key Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain the highest scientific standards and contribute to improving technical and scientific standards within the department.
  2. Assist in setting up, monitoring, and maintaining quality control procedures.
  3. Oversee the release of results, ensuring accuracy and proper computer input.
  4. Help formulate standard protocols in collaboration with the Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Lead.
  5. Supervise Biomedical Scientists and other staff members.
  6. Deputise for the Technical Heads and senior colleagues as required.
  7. Decide on the validity of results, the need for further tests, and interpret results.
  8. Assist in HR processes, including recruitment and selection.
  9. Supervise and perform investigations of varying complexity, including routine and specialist work.
