South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology is on a transformational journey that will fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System. It is our mission to deliver high-quality and innovative laboratory medicine solutions to patients, clinicians and partners to improve health, add value to patient care, safeguard best clinical outcomes and support the transformation of healthcare across SYB and beyond.

We are searching for a Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Haematology laboratories at STH primarily based at the Northern General Hospital site.

Applicants must possess an accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, have relevant experience in Haematology, and hold current registration with the HCPC (Band 5/Band 6 BMS).

We will also consider applicants without specialist portfolio if no suitable band 6 level applications are received. In these circumstances, we would appoint to AFC band 5, or an annex of the band 5 pay scale on a fixed term basis for 12 months for applicants who are imminently about to obtain HCPC registration or Trainee BMS. The appointee will join in the 24/7 OOH service provision.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist providing scientific services to patients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. The successful candidate will be required to participate on the 24/7 out of hours rota and undertake a wide range of complex analytical procedures, performing a range of manual, semi-automated and automated tests using scientific knowledge and experience to comment upon and validate results in line with ISO 15189.

The post holder will:

  • Be responsible for the production of accurate and timely Laboratory investigations.
  • Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
  • Adhere to all Trust and Departmental Policies.
  • Assist in planned Research and Development
  • Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.
  • Stimulate and take part in scientific and technical research and development (Band 6)

The successful applicant, following appropriate training, will participate in the 24/7 service provision on either site, as well as contributing to the extended core working as defined in AfC terms.

Qualifications
  • (Band 5 & 6) IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
  • (Band 5 & 6) Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
  • (Band 6) IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject
  • (Band 5) Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent
  • (Band 5 & 6) Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies
  • (Band 5) Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio
  • (Band 6) Commitment to continuous professional development required to maintain HCPC registration
  • (Band 5 & 6) Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality or training
Experience
  • (Band 5 & 6) Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
  • (Band 6) Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Microbiology/Virology/Histopathology/ Bood sciences * laboratory)
  • (Band 5 & 6) Multi – disciplinary awareness
  • (Band 6) Detailed understanding of job content
  • (Band 6) Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
  • (Band 6) Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques in use across Blood sciences
