Job summary

We have a post in Haematology/Blood Transfusion available for a Biomedical Scientist at Band 5.

Our laboratory is accredited for UKAS ISO:15189 (2022), MHRA, IIP, and as a training laboratory by the IBMS for registration and specialist portfolios leading to HCPC registration. Band 5 applicants will be supported to complete the specialist portfolio.

You will work in rotation within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments, with a future rotation into Biochemistry. The laboratory is well equipped with Abbott HQ's, Werfen TOPs, TOSOH G11, and Immucor, with experience of automation being an advantage.

Main duties of the job
  • Ensure personal competency in all areas of Blood Sciences.
  • Work towards becoming specialised in an area of Blood Sciences, meeting the knowledge and competency level of a Specialist Practitioner via a recognised portfolio route or equivalent experience.
  • Use knowledge, interpretive skills, complex analyzers, and IT to deliver Blood sciences services.
  • Recommend and perform tests in Biochemistry, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion.
  • Perform initial screening and further investigations of specialist diagnostic tests to produce complex quality diagnostic results.
  • Authorise reports as directed by department procedures and guidelines.
  • Train other staff as required.
  • Participate fully in the 24/7 shift pattern once trained.

Job responsibilities
  • Work as part of a team producing accurate diagnostic results across all areas of Blood Sciences.
  • Follow SOPs, suggest improvements, and help develop protocols.
  • Use judgment and departmental guidelines to authorise and report results, referring to senior staff when needed.
  • Participate in all service aspects, including routine, non-core, and shift work.
  • Ensure timely results, especially where immediate patient care is impacted.
  • Use reagents and stocks efficiently, reporting issues to line managers and contacting suppliers as directed.
  • Perform troubleshooting on equipment within competency levels.
