Job description

Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Transfusion

In this vital role, you will be expected: To work in accordance with the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and assist in the development and review of these as required. To receive and analyse samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols. To assist in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To be responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of blood and blood products to patients in routine and emergency situations. To assist in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of blood and blood products. To rotate into any area of the department as required. To participate fully in the departments 24/7 rota service. To prioritise the completion of urgent requests. To telephone important results to an appropriate person when necessary. To be responsible for their own work, under the supervision of senior laboratory staff. To validate and release results to service users as required. To maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate. To prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables. To use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health and Safety policies To perform the routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions. To process internal and external quality control samples as required. To participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual. To participate in risk management of the department, including the reporting of adverse incidents. To participate in audit as required. To assist in research and development projects as required. To assist in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required. To stand in for a senior member of staff as appropriate (e.g. attending a meeting). To participate in staff appraisal according to trust policies and procedures. To undertake continued professional development. To be personally responsible for maintaining HCPC registration.
