Biomedical Scientist Blood Sciences

12-Month fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated recently registered HCPC Biomedical Scientist to join the Blood Sciences Department at St Peter's Hospital.Predominantly with a Haematology background you will be expected to work collaboratively in a Blood Sciences team, supporting haematology, Blood Transfusion, and haemostasis services.You will be expected to complete a training programme to ensure competency before working unsupervised.

Main duties of the job

Once trained and competency is achieved the successful post holder will work in rotation with other staff in all sections of the laboratory, namely routine Biochemistry, routine Haematology, haemostasis and Blood Transfusion. The laboratory is well equipped with, Abbott Ci Chemistry analysers, Alinity HQ and HS, Immucor IRIS Blood Group analyser. The Blood Sciences department at SPH provides a centralised Special Coagulation service for the BSPS network. This highly specialised section uses Werfen ACL TOPs analysers.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited, has training status and is committed to continuing staff development, working towards a fully integrated multidisciplinary model. Therefore, you will progress through a program of training to become a fully competent multidisciplinary BMS.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will liaise closely with the line manager in providing a high quality technical service that builds on the standards defined by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service and ISO 15189:2012. They will be expected to develop and maintain close working relationships with all grades of staff both technical and medical to ensure the effective delivery of the technical service.

Having completed your IBMS registration portfolio you will be trained to achieve highly specialist knowledge, interpretive skills to operate complex analysers and IT in order to deliver a high quality Blood Sciences Service to our users.

Qualifications
  • BSc or equivalent qualification in Biomedical Sciences
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist

Experience
  • Experience of a Blood Sciences laboratory
  • Knowledge of laboratory IT systems
  • Ability to provide technical and scientific advice for own discipline.
  • Awareness of clinical significance of laboratory findings and implications for patients.
  • Dealing with manufacturers and suppliers
  • Ability to review anomalous / unexpected findings and take further appropriate action
