Job description

Thisis an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in thecountry. Our new £30m Pathology building (on the St. Jamess UniversityHospital site) is now operational and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on theLeeds General Infirmary site) is expected to be operational late summer 2025.The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit experienced andinnovative Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry to help shape, deliver andimprove the service we deliver to our patients.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful candidate will work within a large hub laboratory, serving bothLeeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community. This includes the regionalOncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital, which is a uniqueopportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in wide range ofbiochemistry assays.

Tobe considered for this Biomedical Scientist position in Biochemistry, youmust be registered with the HCPC and have demonstrable laboratory experience,along with a keen interest in the scientific field of Biochemistry. Relevanttraining and support will be provided for the successful candidate, including(subject to an application process) support to complete an IBMS SpecialistPortfolio.

About us

OurPathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals inthe Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million andprovide services both regionally and nationally. In addition to the newlaboratory projects, we are also working to deploy a new Managed PathologyService Contract. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is alsoplanned for the future, which will include all in-patient maternity andspecialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternitycentre in the UK.

Thesuccessful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific andclinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 andby the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry andHaematology.

Asa State Registered Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be a member ofthe departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, costeffective, patient focused service consistent with LTHT Pathology objectives.To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession

Thepost holders main role is to carry out the examination of pathologicalsamples using various technologies and to report or present the results asappropriate.

Workingin different sections of the department you will gain the knowledge andskills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate andtimely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professionaljudgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimesdifficult situations, and how to work, often under pressure, eitherindependently or as part of the team.

Youwill be required to communicate information, often related to patientmanagement and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and otherorganisations.

• Already working towards a Specialist Portfolio.
