Role Overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist under the Annex 21 Training Programme at University Hospital Hairmyres. The main duties include:

  • Processing a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Haematology/Blood Transfusion using scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples.
  • Providing advice to clinicians and healthcare staff regarding test appropriateness and time-scales.
  • Being responsible for own work, operating complex equipment, and solving technical problems using specialist training.
  • Mentoring less experienced Biomedical Scientists and participating in training and supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
Details of the Position

Applicants who do not meet the essential criteria will be considered under the Annex 21 training programme, where they will be paid a percentage of the top of Band 6 during training, and upon completion, will move to Band 6 scale.

Candidate Requirements
  • BSc Honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, acceptable for HCPC registration.
  • Evidence of specialist knowledge in discipline-specific procedures.
  • Continuing professional development evidence, such as a portfolio, courses, or reflective practice.

Preferred but not essential:

  • Licentiate of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
  • Previous NHS clinical laboratory experience.
Contract Details

Permanent, full-time position, 37 hours/week.

Based in Haematology at University Hospital Hairmyres.
