?? Job Summary

We are seeking dedicated and experienced Biomedical Scientists to join our dynamic NHS laboratory teams across Blood Sciences, Microbiology, and Histology. This is an ongoing requirement to support departmental needs, offering flexible working patterns and competitive banding based on experience and qualifications.

?? Key Responsibilities

Depending on the band and department, responsibilities may include:

Band 3-4 (MLA / Associate Practitioner):

  • Assist in specimen reception, preparation, and basic laboratory procedures.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment under supervision.
  • Perform data entry and support quality control processes.
  • Work under the supervision of registered Biomedical Scientists.

Band 5 (Biomedical Scientist):

  • Perform routine and specialist diagnostic testing in your discipline.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with laboratory protocols.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance schemes.
  • Contribute to the training and supervision of junior staff.

Band 6-7 (Specialist / Senior BMS):

  • Lead and coordinate specialist areas within the department.
  • Validate and authorise results, ensuring clinical relevance and accuracy.
  • Support service development, audits, and implementation of new techniques.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff and trainees.
  • Ensure compliance with UKAS and ISO standards.

? Essential Requirements

  • UK laboratory experience in an NHS or equivalent setting.
  • HCPC registration (mandatory for Band 6 and above).
  • Relevant degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Blood Sciences (Haematology, Biochemistry, Transfusion)
    • Microbiology (Bacteriology, Virology, Molecular)
    • Histology (Tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining)

?? Desirable Skills

  • Experience with LIMS and automated platforms (e.g., Roche, Abbott, Sysmex, BD).
  • Knowledge of ISO 15189 and UKAS accreditation standards.
  • Evidence of CPD and/or specialist portfolio (for Band 6+).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
