Overall, Job Purpose: To provide multidisciplinary service to all users to help in the smooth and efficient running of all sections within the lab, ensuring safe, rapid, timely, and accurate reporting of results. The investigation and analysis of samples for Haematology and Biochemistry are included. The post holder will be required to work within any section of the department, including core and On Call hours as needed.
Main Duties:
- Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
- Perform Haematology and related tests accurately and efficiently.
- Perform Biochemistry, Immunoassay tests, and other related tests accurately and efficiently.
- Monitor and perform quality control programs.
- Assist in stock control.
- Stay informed of current advances and appraise new techniques.
- Evaluate results for credibility and inform the Pathology Manager, Consultant Pathologist, and/or the requesting clinician of any notifiable abnormalities.
- Rotate through laboratory sections regularly to maintain multidisciplinary skills for ‘On-Call’ duties.
- Communicate patient results and answer enquiries from healthcare professionals, providing information on investigations and results within departmental guidelines and professional conduct.
- Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
- Operate and maintain all analytical equipment.
- Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of investigations using quality control procedures.
- Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results into the pathology computer system.
- Check reports for further action by clinical staff.
- Authorize reports as delegated within departmental policy.
- Assist in preparing documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation.
- Resolve complex problems within the work area and advise clinicians and managers of clinical and managerial issues.
Training and Education:
- Participate in multidisciplinary training as required.
- Maintain personal development and attend departmental meetings.
- Maintain registration with HCPC, including a personal development portfolio.
- Stay updated on developments across all disciplines.
General Duties:
- Familiarize with the day-to-day organization of the Laboratory.
- Attend laboratory meetings as required.
- Undertake assigned work carefully and in compliance with quality standards, regulations, and the Quality Management System.
- Communicate professionally and helpfully with staff, clients, and customers, respecting confidentiality.
- Observe all laboratory rules and policies, including HR policies, health and safety, and fire procedures.
- Behave professionally and cooperate with colleagues.
- Only perform work for which you are trained and signed off as competent.
- Report any issues or incidents promptly to a supervisor or manager.
