Biomedical Scientist

Applications are invited from proactive,motivated, enthusiastic, HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists to join theBiochemistry Department, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Thesuccessful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC Registration as aBiomedical Scientist and preferably have experience in Biochemistry, however candidates nearing completion of their registration portfolio may be considered as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist.

The Biochemistry department at WorcestershireAcute Hospitals offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities at bothWorcester Royal Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital. The Department is UKASaccredited and is recognised by the IBMS for HCPC pre-Registration andSpecialist Diploma training in Clinical Biochemistry. The Department iscurrently equipped with Beckman Coulter DxA 5000 Automation platform, BeckmanCoulter AU5800, DXI 800,DXI 9000, DxC700AU, Sebia Capillarys 3 Tera, Sebia Hydrasys,Cobas e411, Optilite, UVIKON spectrophotometer, AI micro-osmometer, Roche 9180electrolyte analyser.

This department offers training anddevelopment opportunities for the right candidates to further develop theirskills and ambition.

Main duties of the job

The post holders would be working 37.5hours/week and be required to work out of hours as operationally required. Thedepartment supports both acute hospital sites and so provides a 24/7 service inwhich the successful candidate would be expected to take an active part oncetraining is completed. This would involve working as part of the shift system,covering nights, weekends and bank holiday shifts at both the Alexandra andWorcester sites once competent to do so.

Therefore the successful candidates will needto be able to travel between sites.

Job responsibilities

To undertake routine and urgent analysis ofpatient specimens in all five sections of the laboratory on a

rotational basis using a variety of manual andautomated techniques to the agreed quality standard.

To be able to work alone with minimalsupervision.

To participate in specimen preparation andpatient data input in the pre-analytical section of the laboratory as and whenrequired.

To participate in the training and supervisionof Trainee BMS, MLA and other staff and visitors as directed by the Senior BMS.

To participate if necessary in any research ordevelopment work associated with the provision of an efficient ClinicalBiochemistry service.

To maintain , monitor and QC analyticalequipment in the laboratory and outside the laboratory (Point of

Care Testing).

To act as supervisor to the BMS, MLA andclerical staff in the pre-analytical section of the laboratory. To take enquiries from doctors,nurses, other ward staff and from staff at other hospitals and give technicaladvice when needed. To transfer or seekadvice from more senior staff when appropriate.

To maintain state registration with HealthProfessions Council HCPC and to fulfil the standards of professionalproficiency as laid down by HCPC.

To work within all the accepted rules andprocedures of the department and to adhere to the laboratory Health and Safetypolicy.

To participate in the single discipline out ofhours rota as required. Hours worked will form part of contracted hours of employment.Duties to include:

To be able to work alone without supervision.

To be able to take control in any Health andSafety event that may take place out of hours.

To be able to authorise all results as they areavailable to enable them to be reported electronically to wards anddepartments.

To be able to give help and advice to Doctorsand ward staff if needed.

To monitor the quality of the service offeredat all times.

To keep abreast of any new techniques anddevelopments within the department.

To participate in departmental QualityManagement activities in a manner commensurate with post.

To be familiar with the Pathology DirectorateQuality Policy and to ensure its consistent application to all departmentalactivities.

To work under the direction of the departmentalQuality Manager and/or Quality Leads in ensuring the effective implementationof the departmental Quality Management System (QMS).

To maintain familiarity and practise inaccordance with the SOPs for all relevant laboratory procedures.

To participate in scheduled audit activities.The programme of activities shall include horizontal, vertical and examinationaudits, in addition to internal audit of the QMS.

To identify and alert senior staff to anynon-conformances to optimal / required practice.

To participate in the implementation and reviewof appropriate remedial, corrective and/or preventative measures in response toreported non-conformances.

To participate in the maintaining of records,for all staff of whatever grade, which indicate both training received and theoutcome of any assessment(s) of competence, for all relevant laboratoryprocedures.

To participate in training activities so thatown competence to practise in the laboratoryis demonstrably maintained through on-going assessment, as appropriate.

To participate in clinical audit projects.

Any other duties deemed necessary to maintainan efficient Clinical Biochemistry service.
