A regional NHS trust is seeking a qualified Biomedical Scientist to join their histopathology laboratory team. Responsibilities include processing specimens, conducting laboratory investigations, and training staff. Applicants must have a BSc in Biomedical Science and experience within an NHS setting. This practitioner grade Biomedical Scientist (BMS) post involves the processing of biomedical specimens, their analysis and recording of results. The post holder will be an active member of a laboratory team undertaking rotation as required. The post holder will be required to apply their generic skills in a range of laboratory settings.
The post holder will perform laboratory investigations within a histopathology laboratory, troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment, and engage in a range of scientific and technical duties requiring hand–eye coordination and fine adjustment of equipment. The post holder will also be expected to coordinate own work and that of MLAs and students, provide practical training to individual or small groups of staff, and seek to maintain the integrity of records entered on the laboratory database including data entered by others. The post holder will generate test results which contribute directly to serious and life threatening diseases and will be required to report these to clinicians and ward staff.
Participate in the department7s specimen reception, including the receipt, storage & disposal of human tissue in accordance with HTA standards. Assist Band 6/7 staff in specimen dissection. Handling & processing of surgical and post-mortem tissues to routine microscopy, including specialised paraffin techniques, hand processing of minute specimens. Participation in specialised sections: immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, special stains and cryotomy (frozen sections).

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients7 homes.
