About the role

Biomedical Scientists run laboratory analyses that diagnose disease, monitor treatment and screen populations. Day‑to‑day work mixes sample preparation, automated and manual lab analysis, result interpretation, quality control, equipment maintenance and reporting to clinicians.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse blood, tissue, urine and other samples for clinical diagnosis
• Specialise into clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, histology, cytology or transfusion
• Work across NHS pathology labs, private labs, public health labs and pharma R&D
• Interpret results and provide quality assurance

Qualifications & Experience

• Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• IBMS accredited Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science or equivalent
• IBMS Registration Portfolio completed
• Clinical experience in at least one pathology discipline preferred

Benefits & Salary

UK Biomedical Scientists are paid on the NHS Agenda for Change bands: Band 5 (£28,400+) progressing to specialist Band 6 within 2‑3 years; senior and advanced practitioner roles sit at Bands 7 and 8. London weighting adds £4,300 (Inner) / £3,700 (Outer) / £1,200 (Fringe) to NHS base pay. Private pathology labs pay 5‑15 % above NHS rates for experienced BMSs.
