Job summary

Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, Band 5, to join the Blood Sciences team in a full-time role (37.5 hours per week). You will work as part of a multidisciplinary BMS team within Clinical Biochemistry, supporting 24/7 laboratory cover with rotations across days, nights and weekends, and possible basic training in Haematology.

Responsibilities

• Ensure work within Blood Sciences is processed to required standards within agreed turnaround times.
• Perform equipment maintenance and quality control of test procedures to schedules.
• Maintain quality compliance to ISO 15189:2022 including audits.
• Monitor and maintain equipment; perform basic troubleshooting.
• Contribute to timely reporting to support patient care and treatment.
• Validate and authorise routine and specialist results under protocols.
• Rotate through all departments of the Blood Sciences laboratory.
• Assist with laboratory stores and consumables stocks.
• Suggest improvements to working practices.
• Assist with verification of assays or equipment as required.

The Blood Sciences department has an exciting vacancy for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, Band 5.

The Blood Sciences department has an exciting vacancy for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, Band 5.
The role includes working as part of a multidisciplinary trained BMS team primarily within Clinical Biochemistry. The post holder will assist in the 24/7 cover provided by the laboratory where appropriate, including rotation on days, nights and weekends. The successful post holder may also be required to undergo basic multidisciplinary training within Haematology.
The laboratory utilises Beckman Coulter automation across Blood Sciences, and an equipment refresh is due later in 2026 within Clinical Biochemistry for both mainline and immunoassay platforms. Currently the laboratory has AU5811 mainline analysers, and DxI800 and DXI9000 for immunoassay testing. Sebia technology is employed for protein electrophoresis.
Ideally you will currently be working within a UKAS accredited NHS Blood Sciences laboratory as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.

• To ensure the work within Blood Sciences is processed to the required standard, within agreed turnaround times and appropriate action is taken when necessary following departmental procedures.
• To perform equipment maintenance and quality control of test procedures to agreed schedules within assigned area.
• To ensure quality compliance to maintain laboratory accreditation to ISO 15189:2022, including participation in audits.
• To monitor and maintain equipment, to undertake basic trouble shooting and inform section leader of any non-conformities.
• To contribute to providing reports in a timely manner to contribute to patient care and treatment.
• Under strict protocols, validate and authorise routine and specialist results, or refer to Blood Sciences clinical staff for release to users where appropriate.
• To participate in the rotation through, and maintain competency in, all relevant departments of the Blood Sciences laboratory.
• To assist with laboratory stores and maintenance of consumable stocks.
• To suggest ways to improve working practices.
• To assist with verification of assays or equipment when required.

• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
  
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
  
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
