Job description

Bid Writer | Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire | Full time, mostly office-based | Permanent | Bonus scheme

If you enjoy writing more than chasing portals, this role is for you. About 90% of the job is writing. Commercial managers lead each bid, and an administrator looks after the tender portals, so most of your day goes on the content.

The company

This is a specialist international business that works in a niche and rather unusual sector. Its clients include humanitarian organisations, governments and commercial operators around the world. The commercial team has grown recently, with two experienced commercial managers and an administrator joining. The business is putting real money into training and developing its people, so an ideal role for some one to develop and grow with the business.

Bid Writer Responsibilities:
  • Write clear, persuasive proposal content that answers everything the client has asked for
  • Shape each response around what makes the business stand out, and show its expertise in a way evaluators will remember
  • Turn complex technical material into plain, readable copy
  • Draft and edit submissions, including proposals and quotations
  • Go through tender documents closely to understand what the client needs, how bids will be scored and what matters most to them
  • Research regions, clients, competitors and markets so your writing is properly informed
  • Work closely with the bid team so every submission follows the agreed strategy
  • Help keep the bid library, templates and project experience records accurate and up to date
Bid Writer Skills and Experience Required
  • A proven track record in bid writing, ideally around two to three years, though more experienced writers are very welcome too
  • A good understanding of how the bidding process works
  • Persuasive, well-organised writing and a sharp eye for detail
  • Strong research and analysis skills
  • The ability to take in a lot of technical and non-technical information and turn it into clear copy
  • Flexibility to write across different bid types, sectors and services
  • Confidence with MS Office
Desirable's Include
  • Knowledge of the defence or mine action sectors (not essential, as full induction is given)
  • Experience of public and private sector bids
  • Experience of tendering to the UN
  • Experience of using AI tools to improve bid writing
Why apply

You don't need a background in this sector. The induction covers the business, its clients and its bid processes, and you'll get one-to-one coaching and training from experienced commercial managers. If you're a writer early in your bid career and keen to learn, you'll get plenty of support. If you're more experienced, you'll find interesting and varied work.

The role is mostly office-based, and flexible arrangements can be agreed with your line manager.
