Job summary

Alder Hey Children’s Charity is expanding its Philanthropy Team with a brand-new Bid Writer role. You will lead development of funding applications to national grant programmes and statutory bodies, translating complex clinical and capital projects into persuasive cases for support.

Location: Mix of home working and office based (office is at Alder Hey, Liverpool). Hybrid working available.

Alder Hey Children’s Charity raises vital funds to help make Alder Hey Children’s Hospital a truly world-class, patient-friendly hospital for the 450,000 patients and families we care for every year.

The charity helps to fund a range of activities and projects that are designed to enhance and improve the lives of our amazing young patients. This includes the funding of specialist medical equipment to ensure our brilliant surgeons and clinical staff have the most up to date and cutting edge technology available and funding hi-tech distraction equipment designed and proven to reduce pain and anxiety in our patients. We also fund a range of programmes and special projects such as our ward musicians, our on-site magician and the play specialists we have on every ward.

About this role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Philanthropy Team in a brand-new role that will play a key part in securing transformational funding for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

As Bid Writer, you will lead on the development of compelling, high-quality funding applications to large-scale national grant programmes and, over time, statutory funding bodies. Collaborating across the Charity and the hospital, you will translate complex clinical, research and capital projects into persuasive, evidence-led cases for support that inspire investment in the future of children’s healthcare.

This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys writing, research and building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll bring together ideas, evidence and expertise to shape ambitious projects into funder-ready proposals with the potential to make a lasting difference for children and families.

We’re looking for an excellent communicator with outstanding writing skills, exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Whether you’re an experienced bid writer or bring transferable experience developing funding proposals, this is an opportunity to make a real impact as part of an ambitious and growing fundraising team.

Key responsibilities will include:

Bid Development & Writing

• Lead the development and writing of high-quality funding applications to national grant programmes and, over time, statutory funding opportunities.
• Produce compelling, tailored funding applications that clearly demonstrate need, impact and outcomes.
• Manage a varied pipeline of funding applications, ensuring multiple deadlines are delivered to a consistently high standard.

Research & Opportunity Development

• Research and identify new funding opportunities that align with the Charity’s strategic priorities.
• Develop and maintain a proactive pipeline of opportunities, working closely with colleagues across the Charity.
• Work with clinicians and charity colleagues to gather information and develop strong funding propositions.
• Translate complex clinical and technical information into accessible, engaging and persuasive cases for support.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Ensure applications meet funder guidance and eligibility criteria
• Maintain accurate records of applications and outcomes using the charity CRM.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of bid writing processes, templates and resources across the team. Please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification for more information.

Additional Information

In April 2025, the charity adopted a four-day working week policy. Staff previously working 37.5 hours now work 30 hours across four days, maintaining full pay while supporting a better work-life balance.
