Job description

Buckingham Futures are currently partnering with a local authority in the South West of England to recruit an experienced Environmental Protection Officer. This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated professional to step into a dynamic and varied role, combining frontline EP work with team supervision and support responsibilities.

The initial contract is for four months, with a strong likelihood of extension based on performance and ongoing service needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Providing expert input on planning application consultations from an Environmental Protection standpoint
  • Investigating and resolving statutory nuisance complaints, including noise, odour, light pollution, and other environmental concerns
  • Carrying out general Environmental Protection duties as required by the service
  • Supervising and supporting a small team of Technical Officers—offering case support, guidance, and mentoring
  • Working closely with internal departments, external agencies, and members of the public to ensure regulatory compliance and deliver excellent service
  • Maintaining thorough records and producing high-quality professional reports to support enforcement action or planning decisions
Requirements:
  • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health (or equivalent qualification)
  • Solid understanding of legislation such as the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Noise Act 1996, and relevant planning laws
  • Confident handling a wide range of EP matters, particularly statutory nuisance and planning consultations
  • Experience supervising or mentoring others is an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a professional approach to stakeholder management
