Job description

Job Title: Behavioural Support Teacher / Teaching Assistant
Location: Wakefield
Salary: £89 – £145 per day (depending on experience and role type)
Contract: Full-time, Long-Term
Start Date: ASAP

In some classrooms, progress looks different. It’s a pupil walking in without refusing. Making it through a lesson without flipping a chair. Trusting an adult for the first time in weeks. If that speaks to you, read on.

We’re working with a specialist school in Wakefield that supports pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH). They’re looking for a Behavioural Support Assistant, or a Teacher confident in de-escalation and trauma-informed practice, to make a difference where it really counts.

The role includes:

  • Supporting students with complex behavioural needs (often linked to trauma, autism, ADHD, or attachment difficulties)
  • Helping to implement behaviour support plans and positive intervention strategies
  • Building trust and consistency, being that steady adult pupils can rely on
  • Working closely with pastoral staff, SENCOs, and therapists to deliver joined-up support
  • Celebrating the small wins and modelling calm, respectful communication, even when things get tough

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in behavioural support, whether in a PRU, SEND school, youth work, similar role or personal experience
  • A calm, confident presence and the ability to not take things personally
  • Practical understanding of trauma-informed care, de-escalation, or Team Teach (training available)
  • Flexibility, patience, and a firm-but-fair approach to behaviour management
  • A genuine passion for helping pupils rebuild trust in school and in themselves
  • A passion for inclusive education and a desire to make a positive impact
  • A validDisclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checkor willingness to obtain one

What Protocol Education offers:

  • Weekly pay through PAYE (no umbrella companies)
  • FREE Thrive and de-escalation training via our CPD Academy
  • A consultant who gets SEND and will advocate for the right fit
  • Long-term roles in schools that understand the value of behaviour specialists
