A specialist SEN College in Croydon is seeking a Behaviour Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team supporting students aged with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and challenging behaviour.

The Role Behaviour Teaching Assistant

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support to learners with complex behavioural and emotional needs
  • Work alongside teachers, therapists, and support staff to implement behaviour support plans
  • Use positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques to promote engagement and emotional regulation
  • Build strong relationships with students based on trust, consistency, and respect
  • Support students both in class and during unstructured times (e.g. breaks, activities, off-site learning)
  • Encourage life skills, independence, and personal development in line with EHCP targets

Ideal Candidate Behaviour Teaching Assistant

  • Previous experience in an SEN, PRU, or SEMH setting (college or school-based)
  • Comfortable working with learners with ASD, ADHD, anxiety, trauma backgrounds, or those with challenging behaviour
  • Skilled in managing dysregulation using empathy, patience, and clear boundaries
  • Familiar with safeguarding practices, behaviour plans, and person-centred support
  • Team player with a calm, proactive approach and good communication skills
  • Team Teach, CPI, or similar behaviour management training is desirable (but not essential)
