Job summary

GSL Education is recruiting a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to work in Sunderland schools, supporting students with behavioural and SEMH needs and helping them build confidence and positive engagement in learning.

You will collaborate with teachers, pastoral teams, and SEN staff to implement tailored strategies, monitor progress, and promote wellbeing while maintaining safeguarding standards and a safe school environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience with children or young people, especially with behavioural/SEMH needs.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding practices and child protection.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Enhanced DBS on Update Service or willingness to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group behavioural support for students.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and reinforce school expectations and values.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students to promote confidence and resilience.
  • Support students according to their individual behaviour support plans.
  • Assist teachers in managing classroom behaviour and maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Help students develop social skills, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Monitor and record student progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, providing regular feedback to staff.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals to support student development.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.

Behaviour Mentor

Location: Sunderland

Salary: £95 - £115 per day (depending on experience)

Start Date: Immediate

Contract Type: Day-to-day / Long Term, Full-time / Part-time

Are you a patient, resilient, and compassionate individual with a passion for supporting young people?

GSL Education Newcastle are seeking dedicated Behaviour Mentors to work in schools across Sunderland, helping students develop positive behaviours, build confidence, and achieve their full potential in education.

The successful Behaviour Mentor will work closely with students who require additional behavioural and emotional support, helping them overcome barriers to learning. Working alongside teachers, pastoral teams, and SEN staff, you will provide tailored guidance and encouragement to promote engagement, wellbeing, and positive outcomes within the school environment.

Requirements of a Behaviour Mentor:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with behavioural, SEMH, or additional learning needs, is desirable.
  • Relevant qualifications in Education, Psychology, Health & Social Care, Youth Work, or a related field are advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management strategies and safeguarding practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting students.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • Genuine commitment to helping young people succeed both academically and personally.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply via GSL Education.
