Job description

The Edinburgh Academy is seeking to expand its bank of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers (VMT) within the Pipe Band Team; specifically, an experienced and enthusiastic Bass and Tenor Drum Teacher from August 2025. This role requires a commitment of one and a half days of teaching per week, potentially increasing to up to 2 full days.

We welcome applications from well-qualified music graduates with relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience, and a proven track record in teaching pupils from primary to S6. The successful candidate will be passionate about developing the Bass Drum and Tenor Drum programme at The Edinburgh Academy. Teaching may be across both sites: Arboretum and Henderson Row.

The Academy sets a minimum charge for lessons and requires the VMT to pay a Facility Charge for resource use within the School. As a self-employed VMT, there is a direct relationship with parents, and the VMT is responsible for invoicing them directly for tuition fees.

The VMT may have opportunities for group coaching and may be required to support school rehearsals or competitions such as CCF, RSPBA, and Non-RSPBA events throughout the year. Such activities would be remunerated at the hourly rate applicable for that year.

Conditions of Appointment:

The appointment is subject to interview and audition, satisfactory references, identity verification, and proof of qualifications.

Child Protection:

The Edinburgh Academy is committed to safeguarding children and requires applicants to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and PVG Disclosure Scotland.

Equal Opportunities:

The school is an Equal Opportunities employer and welcomes applications regardless of age, disability, gender, race, or sexual orientation.

Interviews are planned between 7th and 14th August 2025.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide weekly individual Bass and Tenor lessons as directed by the Head of the Pipe Band.
  • Provide regular feedback to students on their progress.
  • Support SQA and other exam candidates as needed.
  • Contribute to school and external performances.
  • Maintain positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
  • Follow the guidelines and expectations of the Music Department.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Is an outstanding performing practitioner.
  • Has proven success in teaching young people.
  • Has thorough knowledge of repertoire, including that required for RSPBA Competitions/PDQB exams.
  • Is a prompt and effective communicator, in person and via email.
  • Has excellent organizational skills.
