Base Services Manager

HMNB Portsmouth

12 Month Fixed Term Contract

37.5 hours, Mon-Thurs 7:30am-3:30pm, Fri 07:30am-2:30pm

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Base Services Manager to join the Marine Services team at HMNB Portsmouth. In this role, you will carry responsibility for all HSE issues on site, scheduling and allocating multi-discipline repair work and will include line management of workshop staff.

You will have a team of workshop staff and provide assurance that safe working practices are complied with and to enhance skill base.

We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated leadership experience, a strong engineering background (Marine experience would be advantageous), and a sharp eye for quality and attention to detail.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Take responsibility for HSE for all staff and visitors on site.
  • Develop, implement and sustain plans with regard to safe workshop practices and share best practice across other Serco sites, driving consistency where possible.
  • Provide supervision for base trades and apprentices in all aspects of workplace practices.
  • Coordinate repair work, liaising with Technical Management, workshop staff and vessels
  • Carry out maintenance and repair of Company assets using your existing skill sets to best advantage.
  • Engage and supervise external contractors working on site.
  • Ensure workshop machinery is correctly inspected and maintained.
  • Keep records and update as required.
  • Identify training needs for workshop staff.
  • Responsibility for housekeeping and waste disposal arrangements at RTC.
  • Carry out risk assessments and ensure regular reviews are carried out.
  • Hold regular safety briefings and toolbox talks with staff.
  • Manage attendance and HR issues of workshop staff.
  • Provide instruction, guidance and assistance to trainees.
  • Enhance existing engineering skill sets and capability.
  • Promote productive and efficient work throughput from workshop staff.
  • Be SME for workshop related audits and inspections.
  • Manage continuous improvement to assist the Technical department deliver operational excellence.

What you will need for the role:

Qualified skilled engineer or tradesman with at least 5 years' experience in an engineering workshop environment.

Experience of workshop safety inspections and risk assessments

Working knowledge of HSW, COSSH and PUWER

Previous Person management experience such as team leader, foreperson or workshop manager

Eye for quality and attention to detail

Additional features of the role:

The successful individual must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate Security Clearances and have a full UK driving licence.
