Job summary

Dovetail and Slate is recruiting a skilled Barbering Tutor for HMP Onley to deliver vocational barbering education inside a prison setting. This permanent role focuses on practical skills, rehabilitation, and helping learners progress into employment.

The tutor will teach groups, assess progress, and adapt lessons to diverse abilities. You will work in a safe environment, require DBS checks, and be part of a dedicated education team supporting offender rehabilitation.

Qualifications

• Proven barbering experience and strong practical skills in the trade.
• Genuine interest in supporting learner development and rehabilitation.
• Excellent communication skills and the resilience to work in a secure environment.
• Teaching or assessing qualification desirable; prior prison education or adult learning experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Deliver barbering qualifications to groups of learners.
• Conduct initial assessments and diagnostics to identify learners' starting points and needs.
• Plan and adapt lessons to meet diverse abilities and learning needs.
• Maintain a safe, well-organised and professional barbering environment, including tools and equipment.
• Monitor and record learner progress against individual learning plans.
• Prepare learners for formal assessment and support them towards qualification.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 7:45am-5pm (1 hour lunch) Friday 7:45am-12:15pm

About the Role

We are seeking an inspiring Barbering Tutor to join an education provider in the justice sector, delivering meaningful vocational learning within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them build the practical skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and shape brighter futures.

You'll deliver engaging and inclusive barbering lessons to learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many of your learners will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a genuine belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

• Delivering barbering qualifications to groups of learners.

• A teaching or assessing qualification
• Previous experience in a prison education, further education or adult learning setting
