Job summary

Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH) is recruiting Speech and Language Therapists to join our bank, delivering statutory provision for children aged 4-16 within the Speech and Language Therapy Education Team.

You will work with school-aged children in mainstream schools with SLCN, providing assessment, diagnosis and intervention, and supporting EHCP processes. Experience with autism and SEMH is valued.

Qualifications

• Registered SLT with HCPC and RCSLT, authorised to practise in the UK.
• Experience delivering SLT services in education or school-based settings.
• Ability to assess and manage speech, language and communication needs in CYP.

Job overview

We are recruiting Speech and Language Therapists to join our bank, working within the Speech and Language Therapy Education Team to deliver statutory provision for children and young people aged 4-16.

You will work with school-aged children in mainstream schools who have a range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). The role includes specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people with complex communication needs and, where relevant, dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties).

You will support parents, school staff and other professionals with the management of communication needs and work closely with the multidisciplinary team. You will also contribute to the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process, including Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) reports and delivery of agreed EHCP provision.

We are looking for therapists with experience of working with school-aged children, including children with autism/social communication differences and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Main duties of the job

You will assess children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs and develop, deliver and review appropriate Speech and Language Therapy interventions.

You will:

• assess communication and interaction needs using specialist clinical skills and identify strategies to improve communication at home, school and in other relevant settings
• provide specialist advice and support to parents, school staff and other professionals involved in the child’s care
• contribute professional advice to Education, Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments and annual reviews, in line with the Children and Families Act 2014
• deliver provision set out in Education, Health and Care Plans within mainstream schools
• make appropriate clinical decisions using evidence-based practice, outcome measures and clearly defined care plans
• liaise with the multidisciplinary team to support coordinated care.
• You will be accountable for your own professional practice, working within your professional boundaries and seeking support from senior colleagues when appropriate.

Education/Qualification

• Degree and Licence to Practise from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
• Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT

Experience

• Experience of supporting CYP, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
• Collaborative work with parents and other professionals
• Experience Training others
• Interest to develop clinical specialism in education
• Training/experience of supporting students and more junior qualified therapists including provision of supervision and line management
• Post graduate clinical experience in paediatric dysphagia

Skills and Knowledge

• Understanding of typical child development Speech and Language, Play and other milestones
• Good working knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for school aged CYP with Speech, Language and Communication needs and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual CYP
• Understanding of Religious, Cultural and Linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
• Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the Education)
• Good understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
• Up to date knowledge of professional standards of record keeping

• Ability to assume leadership responsibilities
• Comfortable addressing difficult issues e.g. limited rehab potential; complex condition-related information to patients’ families/carers
• Able to demonstrate initiative and innovative approaches towards work.
