Main duties of the job
Service Development
- To work with others in developing and implementing strategies to obtain the views of patients and carers and ensure their views are incorporated into proposed service developments
- To take an active role in project planning.
- To formulate, implement and evaluate departmental polices and guidelines, updating these as required.
Research and Audit
- To actively participate in audit activity relevant to the clinical area and develop and implement action plans.
Educational
- To be accountable for the teaching, development and supervision of all staff and learners allocated to the area.
- To ensure the appropriate supervision of junior staff and those undertaking preceptorship. To take responsibility for the induction of new staff and lead in the Probationary process.
- To help create a suitable educational environment for all grades of learner.
- To educate and advise patients and carers and to promote positive health education.

Job responsibilities

- Ensure practice for both imaging and non-imaging Nuclear Medicine procedures is in accordance with the HCPC / relevant professional body code of Professional conduct and the Trusts "Employer's Procedures" and to work within limits of competence.
- To maintain high standards of care by personal example and conduct and be a credible and accountable practitioner.
- Participate in the daily clinical care of patients including QC procedures and image processing via modality specific software.
- Responsible for the drawing up, assay and administration of radiopharmaceuticals to patients and appropriate recording of activities. The post holder will need to be aware of the following:
- Legislation concerning administration of radioactive substances.
- Sterility considerations of IV, oral and subcutaneous/intradermal administrations.
- Possible adverse reactions to radiopharmaceuticals or non-active compounds associated with NM procedures.
- Patient's medical condition and fitness prior to the procedure to ensure that clinical objectives of the procedure will be met.
- Legal requirements for consent to a medical procedure.
- Procedures for safe disposal of radioactive waste.
5 . To provide a quality and cost effective service in accordance with Trust policy and procedures, including timely ordering and cancelling of stock provisions from Radiopharmacy where appropriate.
- Ensure that accurate records are kept of all care and clinical procedures.
- Effectively and professionally deal with contingency and emergency situations in accordance with the Health and Safety policy for the Trust and the associated radiation safety policies in the department.
- To be accountable for promoting a safe, clean, clinical environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.
- To be competent in radiographic skills including enhanced practice relevant to the Modality.
- To be accountable for the standards of radiographic practice and for ensuring staff work to those standards.
- To initiate, develop and implement effective methods of care delivery, which may include new ways of working and new roles.
- To assess patients, relatives and other staffs suitability to enter the radiation controlled area, using both verbal and written communication, ensuring compliance with the safety regulations
- To ensure all equipment is properly maintained, reporting repair and service needs.
- To perform quality control measurements on items of equipment as directed by the medical physics expert (MPE) by using standard written protocols
- To ensure that monitoring for radioactive contamination of the work area is carried out according to department procedures and any contamination is removed where possible.
- To assist in the Trust procedures (i.e the Local Rules) governing the safety of nuclear medicine staff, other hospital staff and the general public when working in the nuclear medicine department.
- To carry out monitoring of radioactive waste and ensure correct disposal as specified in the radioactive waste procedure for the department.
