Job description

So, you’re eager to learn more about working within our Bank Team as a Registered Nurse in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at North Bristol NHS Trust?

As a Bank Neonatal Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for the day to day care of babies and their families.

NICU is a well established Level 3 Unit providing a centre of excellence for babies requiring medical and neurological assessment and treatment, and a tertiary referral centre for the South west neonatal network. The unit has 34 cots, comprising of 8 ITU, 8 HDU and 18 SC, with an additional 10 cots on their Transitional Care Ward.

Main duties of the job

As a Bank Nurse, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting all clinical areas of the Trust as and when required.
  • Taking personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring that Trust and local policies and procedures are known and followed and ensuring duties are carried out in accordance with the advisory guidelines and practice set out in the NMC code.
  • Being responsible for assessment, planning, Implementation and Evaluation of patient care.
  • Taking responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care assistants and students as required.

Applicants must:

  • Hold RN (Adult or Paediatric) registration with current NMC license to practice.
  • Have relevant experience within the last 18-24 months - newly qualified staff require 15 months post qualification experience (3 months preceptorship and 12 months appropriate experience).
  • Have a drive to work hard, enthusiasm and the ability to commit to a 4-day induction programme if successful.
  • Have right to work in UK (with relevant Adaptation/ONP if applicable).
  • Have the ability to commence work within 3 months from offer.

  • Take regular responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
  • To report to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patient’s condition or situation.
  • Take personal responsibility for the delivery of care of patients in a defined area.
  • To contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice, as necessary.
  • Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
  • Ensure the safe ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • In the absence of senior staff be responsible for delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, health care assistants and students.
  • Where relevant to be responsible for and assist in co-ordinating discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.

Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
  • RGN with current live NMC Registration - for more than 1 year.
  • Child Protection training Level 3 (Level 2 considered but must be prepared to do Level 3 when in post).
  • Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent).
  • Neonatal qualification in specialism or willingness to undertake.
Work Experience
  • Candidate will have undertaken training for extended roles required by the ward/ department. i.e. IV drug administration.
  • Have relevant experience within the last 18-24 months.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping.
  • Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service i.e. IHS, Acis, Email use.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Evidence of Broad Acute experience.
