Main duties of the job

As a Registered Nursing Associate (RNA) you will provide high-quality, compassionate, and holistic care to children and young people with complex health needs and disabilities. Working within the Community Children's Nursing Team, you will support health assessments, care planning, and the delivery of clinical skills, including medication administration, enteral feeding management, and emergency response.

You will work closely with families, empowering them to make informed decisions, and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to promote health and wellbeing. Working as a RNA you will be responsible for maintaining accurate clinical records, engaging in reflective practice, and adhering to relevant policies and professional standards.

Regular travel across the city to community settings, including homes and schools, is required.

Job responsibilities

The Nursing Associate supports the delivery of safe, compassionate, and family-centred care for children and young people with learning disabilities, complex health needs, or special educational needs. Working under the direction of Registered Nurses, they contribute to health assessments, care planning, and ongoing care within the community nursing caseload.

Key responsibilities include performing delegated clinical tasks such as medication administration (including injections), enteral feeding support, basic wound care, clinical observations, and responding to emergencies. The role involves assisting with EHCP processes, continence assessments, specialist clinics, and maintaining accurate electronic patient records.

The Nursing Associate promotes effective communication with children, families, and multi-disciplinary teams, demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and respect. They support junior staff and contribute to service improvement, clinical audits, and adherence to national and local policies. The role requires working independently within defined competencies, following safeguarding, confidentiality, consent, and lone-working guidelines.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register - or working towards the required qualification.
• Relevant experience of working with children with complex health needs and or disabilities.

Experience

• Relevant experience of working with children with complex health needs and or disabilities
• Experience of working in teams under appropriate supervision as part of a multi-disciplinary team
• Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate
• Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information
• Experience of working with children, elderly, medically compromised patients and patients with Learning Disabilities
• Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical supervision activities
• Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload
• Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and nonverbal communication) with children/YP, parent/carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to support, supervise, assess and act as a role model to nursing associate students, other learners and health care support workers as required within the clinical
• Ability to travel around CCDS clinics

Skills

• Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
• Understands and acts in line with NMC professional standards for practice contained within The Code
• Knowledge of when to seek advice and elevate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice
