We are expanding recruitment for several compassionate, knowledgeable and motivated Healthcare Assistants to join our team at HMP Portland on bank, as part of the South West Prison Healthcare contract awarded to Oxleas NHS Trust in 2022. Our healthcare team promotes health and well-being for those in prison and uses skills and strategies that instil hope for patients’ future resettlement back into the community. We deliver Mental Health, Physical Health, Pharmacy and Clinical Substance Misuse in an integrated delivery model to improve wellbeing and outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • As a Healthcare Assistant you will assist in the delivery of high quality nursing care to patients in HMP Portland with the support of a registered nurse.
  • You will provide physical care to patients according to a written care plan and engage with patients in holistic, needs-led care that considers physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
  • You will promote health and well-being through health promotion activities and programmes, respond to patient needs and assist patients to attain optimal physical health.
  • You must be an effective communicator and able to respond to patient needs in an honest, non-judgemental and open manner.

Qualifications and requirements

Important information

All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting to work in a prison setting. This will be completed as part of pre-employment checks.

You will need to provide:

  • Proof of right to work documentation
  • Proof of ID (must include 1 photographic ID)
  • Proof of address documentation
  • For non-UK passport holders: correct right-to-work documentation and a Home Office share code
  • 5 years of address history
  • Police certificates in English if less than 5 years UK address history for non-UK passport holders
  • Certificate of good conduct or overseas police check for UK passport holders who have lived abroad in the last 3 years

Guidance for obtaining police certificates can be sought at the UK government site; contact embassies or high commissions as needed.
