Bank Diabetes Specialist Dietitian

We are looking for an experienced diabetes dietitian to provide maternity cover for 12 months to support our diabetes team. The post holder will provide nutritional management advice for people with diabetes, work as an independent practitioner in the community setting, and deliver group education to service users and health care professionals. The role requires excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for improving long‑term health outcomes.
Successful applicants will be supported by our Diabetes Specialist Nurses and the wider Nutrition and Dietetic Department. We offer personal development, CPD programmes, clinical supervision, and external training opportunities.

Main duties of the job
- Nutrition assessment, advice and monitoring of a caseload of patients with primarily Type 2 Diabetes, including those at risk of malnutrition.
- Independently manage a clinical caseload of people with diabetes delivered in the community through remote/virtual reviews, community clinics, nursing homes, or patients’ own homes.
- Support delivery and development of diabetes group education programmes for patients, health professionals and social care staff, including DESMOND where trained.
- Adapt clinical and communication skills to suit a diverse population in Luton, providing support to patients with complex clinical, emotional, psychological and social problems.
- Take responsibility for continuing professional development and stay updated with evidence‑based practice in diabetes care.
- Work on a hybrid basis, mainly based in Luton with some home working.

Job responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage a clinical caseload of people with diabetes delivered in the community, including a variety of settings such as remote/virtual reviews, community clinics, nursing homes and patients’ own homes.
- Assess, advise and monitor patients, mostly with Type 2 Diabetes. Provide dietary and lifestyle counselling/education and CBT to support change.
- Support patients at high malnutrition risk with diabetes through nutrition support.
- Suggest appropriate medication changes where applicable and be trained to do so.
- Maintain accurate clinical records, monitor waiting times and ensure timely care.
- Collaborate closely with the community diabetes service, including Diabetes Dietitians and Specialist Nurses, to deliver integrated care.
- Deliver group education sessions and training to patients, health professionals and carers, including for ethnic minority groups.
- Conduct clinical audit and contribute to the service quality and audit programme, developing and monitoring clinical and process standards.
- Provide expertise and support to health staff, including teaching, professional development and student training.
- Develop and implement clinical standards, pathways, policies and procedures in line with departmental, Trust and national dietetic standards.
- Use project management skills to plan, develop, implement and evaluate service developments and diabetes prevention interventions.
- Develop evidence‑based patient information and best practice, identify priorities for service development and support dietetic student training.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers and health care professionals, using advanced counselling, motivation, negotiation and CBT skills.
- Work in various individual and group settings, recognising and acting appropriately for vulnerable clients.
- Conduct joint consultations with Diabetes Specialist Nurses and/or support workers/translators.
- Maintain accurate, timely and relevant records in accordance with Trust policy and SystmOne.
- Provide written letters and care plans to patients/carers, GPs and allied health professionals.
- Alert relevant medical practitioners of medication adjustments needed after dietary assessment.
- Engage with NHS and social care professionals to highlight concerns and seek specialist support for blood glucose control.
- Evaluate, develop and deliver education sessions for health professionals and patient groups, creating evidence‑based resources suitable for diverse populations.
- Maintain positive interpersonal relationships with staff, fostering open communication, trust and respect.
Budgetary Responsibility
The post holder does not hold budgetary responsibility but will be aware of the planning of expenditure for the Diabetes team.
People Management
- Maintain accurate training records, supervise dietetic students, and support service development across the Trust.
- Participate in appraisal and KSF process and maintain professional development.
Research & Development Activity
- Conduct audit and interpret research outcomes, maintain competency through CPD, and apply evidence‑based practice.
- Participate in reflective clinical supervision and contribute to the Nutrition and Dietetic Service quality programme.
Clinical and Practice Governance
- Maintain confidentiality, comply with Data Protection and information governance policies, and adhere to risk assessment and infection control procedures.
- Be registered with the professional body and complete mandatory training.
- Participate in clinical and safeguarding audits, and emergency preparedness processes.
Safeguarding
- Develop safeguarding competencies and comply with local safeguarding partnerships practice, protecting children, young people and adults at risk of abuse or neglect.
Persons Specification
Qualifications and Training
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in dietetics
- Registered Dietitian with HCPC
- Training in communication and behaviour change skills
- Member of the British Dietetic Association
- Trained DESMOND educator
Experience
- Post‑registration experience in dietetics, working within diabetes speciality
- Evidence of continuous professional development in diabetes and other long‑term conditions
- Experience of managing diabetes in inpatient/outpatient setting
- Experience of delivering patient group education
- Familiarity with interpreting blood glucose profiles and CGM reports (Freestyle Libre, Dexcom)
- Experience of supporting nutritional management of patients prescribed diabetes medications, including insulin and GLP‑1 therapy
- Previous experience working in the community setting including care homes and patients’ own homes
- Experience of organising and providing training to other health professionals
- Experience of supervising dietetic students
Knowledge and Skills
- Time‑management skills and ability to prioritise own caseload
- Experience of working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
- Experience working with people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and using translators where required
- Good interpersonal, counselling and motivational skills
- Up‑to‑date with latest NICE guidelines for diabetes care

Salary: £38,682 to £46,580 a year, pro rata.
