Job Summary
Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will prepare, cook, and serve a wide range of high-quality nutritious food, including therapeutic diets for patients, relatives, staff, and visitors to the Ayrshire Hospice. The role involves supervising staff involved in food preparation, service, wash-up, and cleaning duties, contributing to a safe, secure, and caring environment by demonstrating a professional attitude.
This will be in line with Food Safety Regulations, Food Fluid and Nutritional Care Guidelines, Health and Safety, Infection Control, and COSHH Regulations.
Main Responsibilities
- Prepare, produce, and present catering and hospitality services to patients, relatives, staff, and visitors.
- Assist the manager with staff training on machinery and work procedures.
- Minimize food waste by ensuring correct use of provisions and standard recipes.
- Ensure compliance with allergen and labelling regulations.
- Supervise catering assistants to meet daily catering targets within timescales.
- Maintain safe working environments according to health and safety policies and regulations.
- Ensure proper receipt, storage, and stock rotation of food supplies.
- Record temperatures as per HACCP standards.
- Use resources efficiently and report faulty equipment.
- Work effectively as part of the team and with volunteers.
- Maintain high personal hygiene standards.
- Coordinate with clinical staff regarding dietary and nutritional needs.
- Ensure food production and presentation meet standards.
- Complete daily HACCP and Cook Safe System procedures.
- Clean and sanitize work areas and equipment.
- Monitor cleaning schedules and ensure security of kitchen and supplies.
- Dispose of waste properly.
- Contribute to menu development and food item introductions.
- Order supplies in the absence of the Catering Manager.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude aligned with hospice values.
- Comply with health and safety, manual handling, and fire safety regulations.
- Record sign-in/out procedures accurately.
- Complete mandatory and specific training requirements.
- Collaborate with catering team and front-of-house staff to ensure seamless service.

- City & Guilds 706/1 and 706/2 or SVQ/NVQ Equivalent: Essential (A)
- Food Hygiene Certificate – Intermediate: Essential (A)
- Food Allergy Awareness Certificate: Desirable (A)
Knowledge/Experience
- Cook Safe Systems: Essential (A/I)
- Health and Safety Regulations: Essential (A/I)
- COSHH Regulations: Essential (A/I)
- Previous Supervisory Experience: Essential (A/I)
