The role involves:
- Providing highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention to children and young people with complex needs, dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing disorders) and/or speech language and communication needs as relevant to the role.
- Supporting parents, school staff and other professionals in all issues related to client management.
- Liaison with the MDT is an integral part of the role.
Understanding and meeting professional and legal SEND responsibilities outlined in the Children and Families Act 2014 including contributing to statutory assessments of special educational needs and delivery of Speech and Language Therapy provision as specified in children's Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Having accountability for own professional actions and recognising own professional boundaries, seeking advice from senior colleagues as appropriate.
Responsibilities- To assess, develop and implement Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy provision for children with dysphagia and SLCN including additional specialist intervention and support to children with one or more specific clinical areas e.g. Complex Needs, ASD.
- To evaluate outcomes using formal and informal specific assessment tools as appropriate.
- To provide advice and support to others regarding the management and care of children and young people with dysphagia and SLCN.
- To adapt practice to meet individual client and families circumstances.
- To deliver a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy service consisting of evaluation of interventions for complex and difficult cases such as tribunals as required.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities- To act in specialist lead role within the Education team in one or more clinical specialties, e.g., dysphagia, autism, multi-sensory impairment, severe learning difficulties.
- To manage and prioritise a defined caseload/workload independently.
- To monitor and evaluate own highly specialist service delivery and provide progress reports.
- To interpret clinical guidelines and adapt to local service needs on the basis of specialist clinical knowledge.
- To take delegated lead on the development of specific team objectives or projects in liaison with peers.
- To develop care protocols for specific clinical issues e.g. dysphagia, autism, multi-sensory impairment, severe learning difficulties.

Person specificationEducationEssential criteria- Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
- Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT.
- Further study in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study.
Desirable criteria- Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Masters degree or equivalent.
- Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs).
ExperienceEssential criteria- Work with children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties including those associated with complex needs.
- Experience of supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Collaborative work with parents and other professionals, across settings.
Skills & knowledgeEssential criteria- Advanced knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for education and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children.
- Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management.
- Knowledge of typical child development of Speech & Language and general developmental milestones.
