Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesTo provide clinical expertise, acting in a variety of specialist roles, as defined by professional scope, to include; an Advanced MSK Clinical Practitioner (ACP), a First Contact Practitioner (FCP) and a Specialist Spinal Triage Practitioner (SSTP) as the service requires. This will involve seeing patients without prior contact with their GP in order to
establish a timely and accurate diagnosis and management plan.
To effectively manage patients with Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions within Primary Care therefore reducing inappropriate referrals into Secondary Care Trauma & Orthopaedics, improving use of imaging, improving conversion to intervention, reducing variation of
treatments offered and reducing 'waste' in the form of ineffective interventions.
The individual will provide highly specialised MSK assessment and treatment of patients presenting with a range of MSK conditions. This will include requesting and interpreting appropriate investigations and the use of joint and soft tissue injections to aid in the diagnosis and management of the patient's condition.
To be responsible for the clinical leadership, teaching, mentoring and appraising of other MSK Physiotherapy and ACP staff (ACPs, Physiotherapists and MSK Assistants).
Person specificationJob RequirementsEssential criteria- Physiotherapy degree or equivalent.
- Masters degree or equivalent in the field of orthopaedic musculoskeletal management or evidence of equivalent academic intellectual level
- Certified evidence of relevant post registration training and CPD in assessment/diagnosis/treatment
Desirable criteria- Experience of working in the NHS.
ExperienceEssential criteria- Extensive experience post qualification including highly specialised experience in an orthopaedic/musculosk eletal setting
- Experience in the evaluation of clinical practice including participating in research and audit with sound knowledge of research methodology.
- Experience with teaching undergraduate / postgraduate students and supervision of junior staff.
Knowledge & SkillsEssential criteria- Demonstrates advanced clinical reasoning regarding the requesting and interpretation of MSK imaging.
- Demonstrates highly specialist knowledge in the management and treatment of orthopaedic conditions
- Develops and implements service development policies and standards
- Develops, implements and evaluates specialist programmes of care of highly complex musculoskeletal orthopaedic conditions to patients, carers, senior physiotherapists and other AHPs
- Ability to manage own learning and learning of the other members of the team
