Job Summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Birmingham for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our supportive and innovative SLT team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital leading on provision of Specialist Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) input to patients with Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) and or chronic cough within our complex breathlessness multidisciplinary service.

It is an opportunity to work within a supportive and highly experienced MDT in a service that is expanding and developing to address previous unmet need within the area. The post involves taking a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients with suspected or confirmed ILO to determine diagnosis and identify appropriate SLT treatment as clinically indicated. Patients within this service have highly complex presentations with concomitant factors such as breathing pattern disorder, EDAC or asthma. SLT is an integral part of this service. Alongside the MDT you will ensure patients receive a comprehensive and holistic assessment and treatment plan.

This post would ideally suit an individual wishing to expand and apply existing skills in ENT, dysphagia and laryngoscopy. You will have opportunity to work alongside other highly specialist staff including support from RCSLT advisor in respiratory.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

You will have access to nasendoscopy with training opportunities to further enhance and develop your specialist skills. This in addition to being welcomed into a large and supportive therapy team with excellent training and development opportunities, robust supervision and appraisal system.

Main Duties And Tasks

You should be able to work as a highly specialist, autonomous practitioner with a clear passion in assessing and managing complex breathlessness within an outpatient respiratory setting. Alongside this you will provide specialist level training to the wider MDT when required and may also be asked to attend the regional complex breathlessness network meetings. You should be passionate about providing effective patient centred care, as well as being highly enthusiastic about service development of respiratory services.

Experience

Essential

  • Post graduate experience in relevant clinical areas working with patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients within this speciality.
  • Demonstrates a specialist knowledge in speech and language therapy and specialist area, across the range of procedures and working practices with the appropriate theoretical and practical experience
  • Well-established knowledge of assessment tools and a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to clinical area.
  • Experience of involvement in objective upper airway and swallowing assessments (e.g. FEES, VFS, CLP/CLE)
  • Experience of training and supervision of SLT students
  • Experience of training staff groups at all levels
  • Experience of leading audit / quality initiatives on a regular basis
  • Attendance at post graduate courses relevant to the specialist area and speech and language therapy
  • CPD Portfolio sharing evidence of attendance at mandatory training and evidence of in-service training
  • Evidence of working effectively in partnership with others within multi-disciplinary teams and across agencies.
